Project Objectives:      

1.       Providing an optimal youth centre services for all youth in Ogino sub county.

2.       Conducting community outreach programmes, home visits and provision of psycho- social support to the families of people living with HIV

3.       Establishing post test clubs for the HIV positive children and their care takers/guardians

4.       Promoting sexual reproductive health services and rights among the residents of the area. [SRHR]

5.       Sensitization of the residents about the objectives and services of the health centre.

 

Activities:

The project activities include but not limited to;

·         Collecting water, sand and bricks

·         Mixing sand, cement and water

·         Construction of health centre

·         HIV/AID’s prevention training to 30  peer youth counselors

·         Mobilization, sensitization of the community on HIV/AID’s, STD’s/STI’s, sexual reproduction health and Rights-SRHR.

·         Condom outreach and IEC’s distribution

·         Community/ Public talks on health/basic hygiene practices

 

Cultural/ educational visits:

o        Visits to families of people living with HIV/AID’s

o        Visits to homes, schools and markets.

o        Watch a skit on HIV/AID’s performed by the VFSD

o        Games e.g Football/soccer, net ball and athletics, between international and local volunteers.

o        Rehearsing scripts and acting in a either a trigger, drama or a video skit on HIV/AID’s, STD’s and reproductive health.

 

This may also require the participants to come along with their kits/ requirements to be used like costumes   [jazzies], truck shoots, converse shoes, soccer/running boots, head scaffs etc  

 

Note:

This camp is also in a location where there is a possibility of visiting Mountain Elgon and River Manafa viewing in Mbale district all found in a radius of not more than 40 kilometers from the campsite but at the cost of interested volunteers.

 

A cultural night will be organized and participants will be expected to display items, songs and dances from there home countries and traditions. Please carry along anything that will introduce your culture and make this day enjoyable.

 

Expected outcome:

It is expected after the work camp:

·         A fully constructed teenage centre

·         30 Peer educators fully equipped with skills in HIV/AID’s, HIV/AID’s, STD’s, reproductive health  and social life skills

·         Forum theatre presentations to communities

·         More than 500 youth and other members of the community sensitized on HIV/AID’s, STD’s, reproductive health and social life skills in ogyino sub county.

Beneficiaries:

The youth will be the direct beneficiaries as the rest shall of the community including, OVCs, girls, and families of people living with HIV in Ogyino and Atutu sub counties shall benefit indirectly.

 

Participation:

The project expects 15 participants maximum with a composition of people from other regions of Uganda and international volunteers. Participants will work 6 hours daily from Monday to Friday.

 

Who qualifies to participate?

·         Volunteers with open minds, positive attitudes, and warm hearts ready to interact with other people of different cultural backgrounds

·         Willing to take up various tasks from constructing a health centre to playing games, acting in an HIV/AID’s…Movie and willing to share his /her experiences cultures among others

·         Desire to help people living with HIV/AID’s, orphans, vulnerable children, youth, girls, elderly men and women, families etc

·         Flexible and with the ability to accept and adapt to living in rural conditions, taste of other foods (local)

·         Ready to do heavy manual work on the project

Note:
No expertise required, although volunteers with experience in construction are given priority

 

The Host community:

The Eastern part of Uganda is a region of Bateso group of people who speak Iteso as thier major language plus Swahili and fluent English. In this community people are charming and welcoming like most regions in Uganda visitors and always interested to talk/work with people from other cultural backgrounds. Volunteers on this project will have an opportunity to interact with VFSD volunteers and members of Ogyino sub counties.

 

Accommodation:

§         Accommodation will be in a house offered by the community.

§         Participants will be required to carry own sleeping bags and mats.

§         The participants will make own temporary bathrooms but no showers.

§         Participants will make own simple cooking shelter (kitchen)

§         Participants are requested to bring with them mosquito nets, working clothes, gloves, and shoes.

§         The camp sites have latrines not toilets

§         If any games, information/pictures from home country bring them.

 

Meals:

§         There are several local foods to choose from e.g. matooke, cassava, sweet potatoes, irish potatoes, yams, pumpkin and also rice, spaghetti, meat, fish, groundnuts, beans, peas and different types of green vegetables except Nakati.

§         The region is blessed with a variety of fresh fruits that can be easily bought from local markets e.g. mangoes, sweet bananas, water melon, pineapples etc

§         Participants will choose food to prepare depending on the availability.

 

Health Services:

Ogyino is arural area which has with a number of big government health centres and medical clinics.

 

Water Sources:

Water is to be collected by participants from the near by wells/streams

 

Climate/weather:

During March, the weather is always warm and humid. Carrying gum boots (big shoes), a rain coat or umbrella is recommendable.

 

What to bring:

Each participant is expected to bring his/her sleeping bag, mat, mosquito net, working gloves and boots/shoes etc.
